Official contest rules and prizes
Contest open only to residents of the United States and Canada, aged 18 years or older.
NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO ENTER THIS CONTEST.
YOU MAY SUBMIT UP TO THREE RECIPES; EACH RECIPE MUST BE SUBMITTED SEPARATELY.
ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED OR SUBMITTED ONLINE NO LATER THAN JULY 17, 2009.
To enter the 2009 TABASCO® Brand Hottest Chef Contest®, you must be one or more of the following at the time of winner selection:
- A professional chef, sous chef, or lead line cook in a restaurant
- A professional chef, sous chef, or lead line cook at a non-commercial foodservice establishment
- A student at a professional culinary school (NOTE: Students must submit current enrollment documentation to qualify for the contest)
Each recipe must be an original entrée creation serving 12-20, use fresh, easily sourced ingredients, have a recommended menu price that does not exceed $15, and have food costs representing no more than 33% of your recommended menu price for your entry. Ingredient costs must be documented on the Entry Form provided at TABASCOfoodservice.com. Please also include a suggested name for your dish. Your entrée can feature any part of the menu — from breakfast to dinner — and must include at least one of the following three flavors of the TABASCO® Family of Flavors®: Original TABASCO® brand Pepper Sauce, TABASCO® brand Green Jalapeño Pepper Sauce, or TABASCO® brand Chipotle Pepper Sauce.

If entering by mail, each recipe must be submitted separately with (a) signed copy of these Rules, (b) filled out entry form, (c) a color photograph of your completed dish as it is meant to be served to a restaurant patron, (d) your personal contact information, and (e) your current student enrollment documentation if applicable, to the mailing address below.

You may also enter online at TABASCOfoodservice.com by (a) entering your recipe, including food costs, and suggested name for your dish, (b) clicking “agree” to confirm your agreement with these Rules, (c) attaching an electronic color photograph of the dish as it is meant to be served to a restaurant patron, (d) providing your personal contact information, and (e) providing a copy of your current student enrollment documentation if applicable.
All entries will be judged by McIlhenny Company President and CEO Paul C. P. McIlhenny along with top chefs from New Orleans. Your entry will be judged on the following criteria:
- Appropriate use of TABASCO® Brand Products
- Simplicity (easily sourced ingredients and ease of preparation)
- Entry packet submission (overall quality and completeness of all documentation and recipe format)
- Flavor (overall for finished dish)
- Profitability (food costs must not exceed 33% of the recommended menu price for your entrée; the recommended price must not exceed $15. Does the recipe successfully incorporate the budget-friendly contest theme?)
- Plated presentation
- Originality
- Color and Texture
McIlhenny Company is not responsible for lost, misdirected or incomplete mail or emailed entries. Profitability claims for recipes entered will be audited by McIlhenny Company using standardized industry data. Winners will be notified by mail on or before October 15, 2009, as well as announced online at TABASCOfoodservice.com. Winners will be asked to confirm place of employment or current enrollment in a culinary school if the winner is a student. If winners fail to execute and return his or her affidavit of eligibility within 10 days of receipt, McIlhenny may select an alternative winner. Winners’ and finalists’ names may be used without compensation in promotional efforts conducted by McIlhenny Company for its products. The prize for the professional winner is $10,000. The prize for the student winner is $2,500. The decision of the judging panel appointed by McIlhenny Company will be final. You may obtain the winners’ names at TABASCOfoodservice.com or by writing to the above address after October 30, 2009 and providing a self-addressed, stamped return envelope.
Members of the judging panel and employees and advertising agencies of McIlhenny Company are not eligible to participate in the contest. This contest is governed by Louisiana law and is void where prohibited by other applicable law.
By entering the contest, each contestant is agreeing to the following, which will be re-affirmed in the winner’s affidavit of eligibility:
I understand that all entries are the property of McIlhenny Company and may be used by McIlhenny Company for any purpose. McIlhenny Company may change the name of any dish made with my recipe. I also certify that this is an original recipe. I give McIlhenny Company permission to use my name, photographs of my image and entry, and recipe for publicity purposes and will, if requested by McIlhenny Company, cooperate with McIlhenny Company’s reasonable scheduling of a photo shoot. I represent to McIlhenny Company that, in submitting this recipe, the judging committee, their sponsoring organizations, and their employees, agents and assigns are released from any claim or liability of any nature whatsoever arising out of this selection, judging and awards process. I also understand that I am responsible for all taxes which result from my prize winnings and that I will be required to provide McIlhenny with my social security number for purposes of tax reporting before I may claim my prize.
